Feministas Internacionalistas Contra a Ultradireita no Brasil e no Mundo

Diz respeito a todas nós!

Internationalist Feminists Against the Far-Right in Brazil and the World

On October 28th, with 55 percent of the votes, the right-wing extremist Jair Bolsonaro was elected president of Brazil. Racist, misogynist, homophobic, classist and neoliberal, Bolsonaro presents a government project that will affect all minorities in the country, especially women who are black, indigenous, from favelas, the working class, from rural and urban areas. “But what do we, here in Germany, have to do with it?”, you may wonder.

We are internationalist women. We believe that the escalating oppression against women in any country is a problem for all women in the world. Beyond international sorority among women of different identities and realities, there are specific factors that may be of your interest: a number of German companies could profit from the consolidation of the new Brazilian government, through trade agreements that violate human rights – especially those in agribusiness, mining and weapons industries. Three examples should be cited:

1) Thyssenkrupp signed an agreement with the Brazilian Navy and the Ministry of Defense for the construction of warships. The company, which managed for 12 years the largest private investment outside Germany (Thyssenkrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico – TKCSA), greatly contributed to the pollution and violation of human rights in Rio de Janeiro.

2) Brazil became Bayer’s second biggest market, after its merger with two giants of the agribusiness sector (seeds and agrochemicals), Monsanto and BASF. As the new Brazilian government has already showed its intention of changing the legislation regarding environment, small farming and protection of indigenous lands, we can imagine the pressure these German companies proceed to bring about regulations which benefit them (e.g., the “Poison Package”) and the profits they will get from these new laws.

3) It was a Heckler & Koch weapon that killed the socialist and human rights activist Marielle Franco, who was a Rio de Janeiro councilor. Heckler & Koch weapons were also used by the police which killed 111 prisoners in the 1992 Carandiru prison massacre in São Paulo. According to the German government’s Arms Export Report, only in the first 4 months of 2017 they established 37 export licenses with a total of up to 11 million euros. Considering that one of Bolsonaro’s proposals is to change the Disarmament Statute and facilitate the purchase of weapons by the civilians, we can imagine that German companies in this industry could greatly raise their profits.

In the same way as Trump and other far-right candidates, Bolsonaro was elected through intense practices of misinformation at social medias. He also had at his side a limited critical coverage from traditional media, which many times criminalized leftist leaders and social movements (it is worth remembering that in Brazil, only 5 families control 50% of the main communication vehicles and that, although not permitted, there are still many congressmen who own radio and television channels, using them to broaden their political power, as well as some of Bolsonaro’s allies).

A man like Bolsonaro in the presidency is a catastrophe for all women, as he does not only legitimize but also encourages misogynist violence, through language and politics. Brazil is the 5th country in the global rate of violence against women: there are 12 victims of femicide per day, besides more than 500,000 rapes and 400 murders of LGBTQI + people per year. In addition, Brazil has the most violent police in the world. Indigenous and quilombola territories protected by law have been already attacked and expropriated, with women being the most vulnerable in these actions. And just to remember, this is all happening before he takes office.

Germany needs to say NO to this!

At the same time, the manifold feminist, women’s and LGBTQI+ movements in Brazil were responsible for the most successful fight for a free and less uneven society, with respect to differences and identities. It was a big coalition of women organized in Brazil and abroad which threatened Bolsonaro’s election. These women need all the support and solidarity from women all over the world.

If those issues touch you, you can collaborate putting pressure onto congressmen, or together with other organized groups that already work the topics disarmament, feminist agroecology, internationalist feminism, antifascism, antiracism or against capital, land and media concentration and the rise of the far-right. This struggle concerns not only Brazilian women. It is about all of us!

Deutschland muss dazu nein sagen!
