Angela Davis is a political activist, philosopher, academic, scholar, author and above all a revolutionary! When we thought about how we would like to mark the 10 years anniversary of the occupation of O-Platz and the start of our movement, we had the courage to dream of having Angela speak to us, many of us at O-Platz. And because dreaming is free, we went ahead and asked her, and, to our joy, she accepted our invitation.

The speech documented in this video is a lesson on the vestiges of colonialism and enslavement, and a reminder of women*’s power and leadership in struggles around the world. It is a speech about hope and our role as activists in transmitting hope, and it is also a speech about about freedom.

As Angela Davis says, remembering the song “Freedom is a constant struggle”, which is a freedom song that was repeatedly sung in the southern United States during the twentieth century freedom movement.

IWS RADIO #15 | Ukraine: BIPoC refugees are fleeing the same bombs but don’t get the same treatment https://iwspace.de/2022/08/iws-radio-15/ Fri, 26 Aug 2022 13:55:20 +0000 https://iwspace.de/?p=75957

On February, 24, 2022, the Russian army attacked Ukraine forcing millions of people to flee their homes seeking safety and protection within Ukraine itself or to neighboring countries. Faced with such an emergency, European countries decided quickly and without much bureaucracy that Ukrainian refugees would receive temporary protection for up to three years without having to apply for asylum, with rights to a residence permit and access to education, housing and the labor market. However, not all people fleeing Ukraine could access such freedom of movement or protection. Black and brown refugees were met with a different kind of welcome at the borders and beyond them.

To talk about this situation Jennifer Kamau speaks with Nora Brezger from the Flüchtlingsrat Berlin and Dalís Pacheco Salcedo, from the Universität der Künste Berlin.

Our BREAK ISOLATION GROUP three years on https://iwspace.de/2022/05/break-isolation-group-iws/ Tue, 10 May 2022 09:04:34 +0000 https://iwspace.de/?p=75865

Our Break Isolation Group was formed in 2019. Here is an update three years on.

Break Isolation Group is a group of refugee and asylum seeking women-only. BIG is part of the International Women* Space and aims to encourage women* in their various capacities to create and implement projects, workshops and activities for the empowerment of women. BIG regularly visits Lagers (forced housing for refugees) to learn more about the situation of women living in Lagers and to present the Group and its activities. This project is funded by Filia – Die Frauenstiftung.

BIG proposes that interested women join the group and together build platforms to speak out in our own voices, express ourselves freely, for us and about us and denounce others speaking about us and on our behalf without us. So far we’ve made a series of Podcasts called “Lager Reports” exposing the hardships that refugee women faced during the corona pandemic. And at the moment, we are developing a series of workshops and initiatives as a way to make clear that we condemn any form of oppression, violence, discrimination or intimidation as we fight and defend our rights amidst rigid and oppressive asylum structures, processes and systems.

In 2022, with funding from the Alliance for Gender Equality in Europe (AGEE), BIG also initiated several projects with concepts being developed by individual women in the group. These projects include home-made natural hair oil, social dancing, make-up tutorials, bakery and pastry making, food production through vegetable gardens, celebrating multicultural diversity and adopting a culture of community structural support by feeding street families, the homeless with a hot meal at least once a month. In a collective participation in these projects and self-organization, women commit to building a movement from the grassroots, embracing self-care as well as cultivating leadership and skill development.
