Abortion is the essence of every woman’s right to own her own body! Abortion is a question of public health, and we from the International Women Space stand in total solidarity with the women in Poland and totally against this newly near total ban of abortion in their country!

The approval of the ruling has been delayed and today we are here to recognize our achievements but also to say we will not recognize decisions taken by the body of a supreme court, formed by a majority of religious fundamentalist white men!

Not in Poland, not anywhere! Misogynistic laws must be broken! Violent laws that lead women to perform unsafe abortions must be broken! Because all women know and everybody knows Women DO make abortions and will CONTINUE to make abortions!

We are sure that all these powers in Europe: Governments, Legislators, the catholic church CANNOT care less if women making an abortion is not a white woman! If it’s a migrant! If its a Black woman or a woman of colour.

We call on doctors in Poland and all around the world to go on civil disobedience! And provide safe abortions!

The irony though is that the same people banning abortions for white women would EVEN support sterilization for us migrants. This is how Capitalist patriarchy works and this misoginist system must be held accountable for the Femicide!

Another irony is to see how much empathy is given to foetuses when full grown, living human beings are drowning in the Mediterranean Sea trying to reach Europe! And no state, no institution care! No church, no defenders of human life care! White apathy is violence! White supremacy kills. Whose lives matter?

We call all internationalist feminists to raise against all misogynistic laws!

And again, we see the state sending thousands of cops to defend a property Padovicz decided is his. All that this man represents and the complicity of the state are simply disgraceful, to say the least!

If you show up only when Black murder is trending, then you are just another problem in the fight for racial justice.

Black Lives Matter Berlin

Women collectives from the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro self organized together a solidarity campaign – Teia de Solidariedade Zona Oeste – to attend invisibilized communities in the poorest area of Rio city, which already face serious consequences from the Coronavirus crisis. Since last week, we internationalized the campaign to potentialize the capacity of the women collectives to attend those families, many of them single mothers (allerting that violence against women rose 9% in Brazil after the crisis installed in the country).

They are collectives mostly composed by black women living in the West Zone of Rio and
who historically act on several popular anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-capitalist fronts.The campaign has already reached more than 30 families, but they need more support to continue delivering emergency food and hygiene items to much more people who have lost their little income amidst the neglect of the Brazilian State. Während zu Hause bleiben das aktuelle Gebot ist, um eine eigene Ansteckung und Verbreitung des Virus zu verhindern, ist diese Option für obdachlose Menschen nicht verfügbar.

Wir, die Schlafplatzorga, vermitteln nun schon seit 5 Jahren temporäre Schlafplätze in privaten Wohnungen an obdachlose Migrant_innen und Geflüchtete, die strukturell vom Wohnungs- und Arbeitsmarkt ausgeschlossen werden. Auch aktuell suchen uns Menschen auf, die dringend eine Unterkunft benötigen. Viele ihrer Unterstützungsstrukturen fallen gerade aufgrund der Einschränkungen im öffentlichen Leben weg. Gleichzeitig haben einige der von uns Unterstützten keine Krankenversicherung, geschweige denn einen sicheren Ort, um eine mögliche Krankheit auszuheilen. Und auch vom Staat ist keine Unterstützung für die Betroffenen zu erwarten.

In Zeiten der aktuellen Krise lässt sich das Aufkommen einer neuen Solidarität in unserer Stadt beobachten. An diese Solidarität appellieren wir, wenn wir euch darum bitten, zu überlegen ob ihr eine Person bei euch zu Hause aufnehmen könnt. Ein Platz für mindestens zwei Wochen ist sinnvoll, da so die Anzahl der sozialen Kontakte der Person, die ihr aufnehmt, stark eingeschränkt wird.

Uns ist klar, dass in Zeiten eines sich verbreitenden Virus die Bedenken eine fremde Person zu Hause aufzunehmen besonders hoch sind. Leider gibt es keinen Weg festzustellen oder euch zu garantieren, dass die von uns vermittelten Personen nicht bereits angesteckt sind. Places to sleep and retreat needed – solidarity in times of Corona

The current Corona virus crisis and the associated necessary restrictions in our daily lives affect us all. However, there are groups of people who are suffering from the situation to an even greater extent. While staying at home is the current imperative to prevent one’s own infection and spread of the virus, this option is not available for homeless people.

We, the Schlafplatzorga, have been mediating temporary sleeping places in private apartments to homeless migrants and refugees who are structurally excluded from the housing and job market for 5 years now. Also at present, people who urgently need accommodation come to us. Many of their support structures fall away precisely because of the restrictions on public life. At the same time, some of the people we support have no health insurance, let alone a safe place to recover from a possible illness. And no support for those affected can be expected from the state either.

In times of current crisis, we are observing the emergence of a new solidarity in our city. We appeal to this solidarity when we ask you to consider whether you can accommodate a person in your home. A place for at least two weeks is advisable, as this would greatly limit the number of social contacts of the person you are hosting. We are aware that in times of a spreading virus, the concerns about welcoming a stranger in your home are particularly high.

Unfortunately, there is no way to determine or guarantee that the people we mediate are not already infected. It is therefore up to you to consider whether you can and want to take this risk and observe all precautions during the time spent together, as well as paying attention to the development of symptoms.

Last week, IWS had a visit from Yuli Riswati who told us about her experiences, organising, campaigning for migrant domestic workers’ rights and reporting on the protests in Hong Kong. She was not able to join us at the demo yesterday, but she wrote us a message of solidarity that was read out:

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of you here who have joined today’s mass action to celebrate International Women’s Day.

It is truly a pleasure for me to convey this message of solidarity to you.  When we as women around the world try to connect to each other to celebrate and honor women of the past, present and future by continuing to struggle to break the system that still supports and confines and marginalizes women, that’s where we all begin to win.  Spirit!

On International Women’s Day there are many things and reasons for celebration, reasons for a moment to stop and re-evaluate, memories, inspiration, time to respect loved ones and admiration in the world and especially in Germany. 

Like theme of women’s world day this year “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”, so it is not a party, It is a fight for Women’s Rights!

As a woman who trying to fight for and voice women’s rights through writing, a woman who is a migrant domestic worker, and has experienced the pain of discrimination, illegal detention and deportation, an important lesson I have learned over the years is that there is actually an inequitable access to information  and education coupled with the poor system of government everywhere that has prevented women from advancing, equal and fulfilled their rights.

We as women need changes in systems and good governance that can give us the opportunity to share the power to make decisions in politics, in economic and social life, in public administration and even in our own homes.

Let’s rise, and join hands to fight together.  No matter where we stay, No matter from which angle peoples look at you, Women’s Day is the perfect to say: we are proud be women.

As we celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, let us also remember that the struggle is far from over.  Women’s empowerment and struggle should not be reduced to individual success stories.  It must be about collective well-being and justice for the collective!  For women, be it domestic workers, migrants, refugees and all!

Progress in women’s rights takes place step by step, and each victory becomes the foundation upon which it can be built.  It is our duty together to continue holding hands, struggling and building until we have raised a platform high enough to change the earth’s horizons.

Feedback: the event showed a good mixture of perspectives of activists struggling for memory and representation, for right to have rights and for ways to strengthen solidarity between individuals, groups and organisations.

Am 15. März 2019 fand im Prozess gegen die schwarze Geflüchtete Fatou ein zweiter Verhandlungstag statt. Wieder sind um die 40 Menschen gekommen, um den Prozess solidarisch zu begleiten. Fatou wird vorgeworfen, im Juni 2018 trotz Hausverbots einen Netto-Supermarkt in Bamberg betreten und eine Dose Katzenfutter auf einen dort tätigen Wachmann geworfen zu haben. Dafür bekam Sie einen Strafbefehl von 120 Tagessätzen. Sie bestreitet jedoch die Vorwürfe und betont, dass der Wachmann sie zuerst rassistisch kontrolliert und später misshandelt hat. Gegen den Strafbefehl legte sie Einspruch ein. Trotz dünner Beweislage und widersprüchlicher Aussagen der Belastungszeug*innen wurde Fatou am 15. März der versuchten gefährlichen Körperverletzung schuldig gesprochen und zu 35 Tagessätzen verurteilt.

Der am ersten Verhandlungstag am 8. März geladene Polizeizeuge hatte Fatou mehrmals als „aggressiv“, „unkooperativ“ und „gefährlich“ dargestellt, konnte aber zu den angeklagten Taten nichts Relevantes sagen. Daher waren für den 15. März weitere Zeug*innen geladen: der Wachmann, der Fatou kontrolliert und misshandelt hatte, eine Mitarbeiterin des Netto in leitender Position, eine weitere Netto-Mitarbeiterin, sowie ihr Freund, der zum Zeitpunkt der „Tat“ privat in dem Supermarkt gewesen sein soll. Alle sind gut bekannt mit dem Wachmann.

Alle geladenen Zeug*innen belasteten Fatou, indem sie behaupteten, den Wurf der Katzenfutterdose gesehen zu haben. Im Detail unterschieden sich ihre Angaben allerdings in wichtigen Punkten, besonders die Version des vermeintlich geschädigten Wachmanns wich erkennbar von den Darstellungen der anderen Zeug*innen ab. U.a. behauptete er, Fatou habe ihn vor dem Wurf geohrfeigt – eine Aussage, die sonst niemand bestätigen konnte.

Die Staatsanwältin stellte einerseits fest, dass die Aussage des Wachmannes „mit Vorsicht zu genießen“ sei. Die voneinander abweichenden Angaben würden aber andererseits gerade dafür sprechen, dass die Zeug*innen ihre Aussagen nicht abgesprochen hätten. Die Richterin schloss sich dieser Sichtweise an und kam zu dem Schluss, dass das Kerngeschehen, der Wurf der Dose, sich bestätigt habe. Dass Fatou am Ende „nur“ zu 35 Tagessätzen verurteilt wurde, lag daran, dass die Richterin von einer verminderten Schuldfähigkeit ausging, da Fatou ‚psychische Probleme‘ habe.

Die strukturellen Ursachen dieser ‚Probleme‘ oder auch ihrer Wut wurden im Prozess jedoch an keiner Stelle benannt: Die wiederholten rassistischen Schikanen im Lager und außerhalb des Lagers, darunter die rassistisch motivierte Taschenkontrolle, mit der die Netto-Geschichte ihren Anfang nahm. Das Gericht hat auch nicht berücksichtigt, dass Fatou die einzige ist, die bei den darauf folgenden Geschehnissen verletzt wurde und versäumte es, den weißen Zusammenhalt der Zeug*innen gegen eine angeblich „hysterische“, „aggressive“ oder „labile“ Schwarze Frau zu hinterfragen. Mit seiner Entscheidung trägt das Amtsgericht Bamberg zur Normalisierung rassistischer Gewalt und zur Stigmatisierung von Schwarzen und geflüchteten Menschen bei.

Fatou hat Courage gezeigt: Sie wollte die rassistische Kontrolle und die Schikanen durch den Netto-Wachmann nicht hinnehmen und hat Anzeige erstattet. In der Folge wurde sie durch die Strafjustiz kriminalisiert. Jetzt droht ihr ein weiteres Verfahren, weil sie auch gegen die Polizei Anzeige erstattet hat. Wir fordern ein Ende der rassistischen Verdächtigungen und der Gewalt gegen Geflüchtete und von deren Kriminalisierung durch die Strafjustiz! Wir werden weiterhin solidarisch an Fatous Seite stehen und, wenn ein weiterer Prozess ansteht, zur Prozessbeobachtung aufrufen.

Continuation of Fatou’s trial – report of the 2nd hearing

On 15 March 2019 a second hearing took place in the trial against the Black refugee woman Fatou. Again about 40 people came to accompany the trial in solidarity. Fatou is accused of criminal trespassing in a Netto supermarket in Bamberg in June 2018 and throwing a can of cat food at a security guard. For this she received an order of punishment (Strafbefehl) of 120 daily rates (Tagessätze). However, she denies the accusations and stresses that the guard first performed a racist control on her and subsequently mistreated her. She appealed against the order of punishment. Despite thin evidence and contradictory statements by witnesses, Fatou was on 15 March found guilty of attempted assault (versuchte Gefährliche Körperverletzung) and sentenced to 35 daily rates.

On the first day of the trial on 8 March the police witness had repeatedly described Fatou as “aggressive”, “uncooperative” and “dangerous”, but could not say anything relevant about the accused acts. Therefore, for March 15, further witnesses were invited: the security guard who had controlled and abused Fatou, a Netto employee in a managerial position, another Netto employee, as well as her boyfriend, who presumably was in the supermarket on his leisure time at the moment of the “crime”. Each is well acquainted with the security guard.

All the invited witnesses accused Fatou of throwing the cat food can. In detail, however, their statements differed in important points, especially the version of the supposedly damaged party, the guard, deviated noticeably from the depictions of the other witnesses. Among other things, the guard claimed that Fatou slapped him in the face before throwing the can – a statement that nobody else could confirm.

On the one hand, the prosecutor stated that the guard’s statement should be “taken with caution”. On the other, she claimed that the differing of statements indicated that the witnesses had not agreed upon them beforehand. The judge took this point of view and came to the conclusion that the core event, the throw of the can, had been confirmed. The fact that Fatou was “only” sentenced to 35 daily rates in the end was due to the fact that the judge assumed a diminished criminal liability because Fatou had ‘psychological problems’. However, the structural causes of these ‘problems’ , or of her anger, were not mentioned at any point during the trial: The repeated racist harassment inside and outside the AEO camp, including the racist bag control that marked the beginning of Netto episode. The court also failed to take into account that Fatou was the only one injured in the subsequent events and failed to question the white team spirit of the witnesses against an allegedly “hysterical”, “aggressive” or “unstable” Black woman. With its decision, the Bamberg local court contributes to the normalization of racist violence and the stigmatization of Black people and refugees.

Fatou showed courage: she did not accept the racist control and harassment by the guard and filed a complaint. Subsequently she got criminalized. Now she is threatened with another trial because she also filed a complaint against the police. We demand an end to racist suspicions and violence against refugees and their criminalisation! We will continue to stand together with Fatou and, if another trial is announced, call for trial monitoring.

März zum Amtsgericht Bamberg (Adresse: Synagogenplatz 1, 96047 Bamberg), um Fatous Kampf weiter zu unterstützen und erneut die strafrechtliche Verfolgung einer schwarzen geflüchteten Frau kritisch zu beobachten. Beginn des zweiten Prozesstages ist 10.00, aufgrund der Eingangskontrollen treffen wir uns bereits um 9.15 vor dem Eingang.

Was ist am 8. März passiert?

Vielen Dank an alle, die sich solidarisch mit Fatou gezeigt haben und beim Gerichtsprozess dabei waren. Alle 45 Plätze im Saal waren besetzt! Das war ein großer Erfolg. Vielen Dank auch an alle, die bundesweit mobilisiert hatten.

Nachdem Fatou ihre Sicht der Ereignisse geschildert hatte, wurde als Zeuge ein Polizist befragt. Zwar konnte er nicht viel mehr sagen, als bis dahin bereits bekannt war, doch wurde er nicht müde zu betonen, wie “unkooperativ” Fatou sich bei ihrer Festnahme verhalten habe. Das ist äußerst zynisch, wenn man bedenkt, dass sie zuvor vom Sicherheitspersonal des Supermarktes rassistisch kontrolliert, grundlos festgehalten und auf den Boden gedrückt wurde. 

Außerdem gab es massive Probleme mit der Übersetzung, da die vom Gericht gestellte Übersetzerin Schwierigkeiten hatte, Fatous Akzent zu verstehen und wiederum sich ihr gegenüber verständlich zu machen. Energische Hinweise aus dem Publikum bei groben Übersetzungsfehlern wurden zwar von der Richterin nüchtern zur Kenntnis genommen, ohne, dass sie jedoch an der Situation etwas änderte.

Da Richterin und Staatsanwaltschaft feststellten, dass die bisherige Beweislage ungenügend ist, wurde der Prozess auf nächsten Freitag, den 15.3., um 10.00 vertagt. Geladen werden sollen an diesem Termin Leute vom Sicherheitspersonal, NettomitarbeiterInnen und PolizeibeamtInnen. Wir rechnen damit, dass eine recht einseitige Sichtweise dargestellt werden wird. Umso wichtiger ist es, an diesem Tag wieder den Saal zu füllen. Für Fatou war es nach eigener Aussage unglaublich wichtig, eine solche Unterstützung heute erfahren zu haben. Wir haben gemerkt, wie anders die Stimmung im Raum ist, wenn viele Leute da sind, die auf ihrer Seite stehen.

Come to the court (Amtsgericht) – address: Synagogenplatz 1, 96047 Bamberg, to continue to support Fatou’s fight and to watch critically the criminal prosecution of a refugee black woman. The process will start at 10:00, but we will meet at 9:15 because of the entry control in front of the building.

What happened in court on 8th March?

Many thanks to all who showed their solidarity with Fatou and were present for the court proceedings. All 45 seats in the hall were occupied! That was a great success. Many thanks also to all who mobilized nationwide.

After Fatou described her view of the events, a policeman was questioned as a witness. Although he could not say much more than was previously known, he tired to emphasize how “uncooperative” Fatou was when she was arrested. This is extremely cynical, considering that this was after the racist control by the security staff of the supermarket, where she was held for no reason and pushed to the ground.

In addition, there were massive translation problems, as the court-appointed translator had difficulty understanding Fatou’s accent and making herself understandable for Fatou. Hints from the audience after many translation errors were noted by the judge soberly, but without changing or improving the situation.

Since the judge and the prosecutor’s office found that the previous evidence was insufficient, the trial was postponed to Friday, March 15, at 10.00. On this date, people from the security staff, Netto employees and police officers should be invited. We expect that a rather one-sided view will be presented. So it is absolutely important to fill the court room again on this day. According to Fatou, it was incredibly important to have received such support today. We have noticed how different the energy in the court room is when there are many people having your back.
