Little Brother: An Odyssey to Europe
Norabideak is a project that has as its origin the literary translation between Basque and German in order to build bridges between the two languages and cultures. Norabideak in Basque means something like course, direction, orientation or tendency.
This year, Norabideak is organised around the book Miñan (Susa, 2019) / Little Brother: An Odyssey to Europe (Scribe Publications, 2021). The work represents the last literary translation directly from Basque into German and is the testimony of the true story of the exile journey of its author Ibrahima Balde, who crossed the Mediterranean in search of his missing younger brother. Kleiner Bruder was written with Ibrahima Balde’s voice and Amets Arzallu’s hands.
On 19 May, the Literaturhaus Berlin will host the presentation and multilingual reading of the book as well as a panel discussion on the topic of “Exile Narratives” with the author Amets Arzallus and the initiatives Mediterranean Monologue (theatre), 9 days on the Roof (documentary film) and In Our Own Words (testimonial literature). The event is meant to be a platform to get to know the invited initiatives better and a space to exchange ideas and experiences.
This project is the result of the collaboration of the Lectorates for Basque Language and Culture at the FU Berlin and the University of Leipzig and is supported by the Gernika Deutsch-Baskischer Kulturverein, Etxepare Institute and the AStA FU Berlin.

Kleiner Bruder: eine Odyssee nach Europa
Norabideak ist ein Projekt, das als Ausgangspunkt die literarische Übersetzung zwischen Baskisch und Deutsch hat, um Brücken zwischen beiden Sprachen und Kulturen zu bauen. Norabideak bedeutet im Baskischen so etwas wie Kurs, Richtung, Orientierung oder Tendenz.
Dieses Jahr wird Norabideak rund um das Buch Miñan (Susa, 2019) / Kleiner Bruder (Suhrkamp, 2021) organisiert. Das Werk stellt die letzte Literaturübersetzung dar, die aus dem Baskischen direkt ins Deutsche übertragen wurde und ist das Zeugnis der wahren Geschichte über die Flucht von seinem Autor Ibrahima Balde, der das Mittelmeer überquerte, um seinen vermissten jüngeren Bruder zu suchen. Kleiner Bruder wurde mit Ibrahima Baldes Stimme und Amets Arzallus Händen geschrieben.
Am 17. Mai werden sich der Autor Amets Arzallus und der Übersetzer Raul Zelik an der Universität Leipzig treffen, um über den Übersetzungsprozess des Buches zu diskutieren. Der Vortrag wird ab 15:00 Uhr im Hybridformat gehalten und ist online zu hören.
Am 19. Mai findet am Literaturhaus Berlin die Präsentation und mehrsprachige Lesung des Buches sowie eine Podiumsdiskussion zum Thema „Flucht- und Exil Erzählungen” mit dem Autor Amets Arzallus und den Erzählungsinitiativen Mittelmeer Monologue (Theater), 9 days on the Roof (Dokumentarfilm) und In Our Own Words (Testimonial-Literatur). Die Veranstaltung soll eine Plattform sein, um die eingeladenen Initiativen näher kennenzulernen, und einen Raum für den Austausch von Ideen und Erfahrungen darstellen.
Dieses Projekt ist das Ergebnis der Zusammenarbeit der Lektorate für baskische Sprache und Kultur an der FU Berlin und der Universität Leipzig und wird vom Gernika Deutsch-Baskischer Kulturverein, Institut Etxepare und AStA FU Berlin unterstützt.
